Sophisticated Load-sharing

Diameter Edge Agent

The Diameter Edge Agent (DEA) relays messages, acting as a proxy, which is vital for network scalability and security especially when connecting to parties outside of your secured core network.

Topology Hiding

The DEA masks internal network elements by normalising all diameter exchange information and screening external connection points from internal Diameter nodes. No internal element will communicate directly with an external element.

Roaming Services

For services such as LTE roaming, a DEA is essential.
Connections via hubs or directly to foreign / partner networks all pass via the Edge Agent to protect your home network and to simplify architecture and integration efforts.

Security

  • All DEA nodes and other TruTeq Diameter nodes have on-board firewall capability.

The TruTeq Proxy Agent can act as both a Proxy and Relay at the same time. The Diameter proxy acts as an intermediary, sitting between the Diameter clients and servers. This allows for many useful functions that would be difficult or impossible without the proxy.

Transforms can be applied on either request or answer messages.

Diameter plays a crucial role in Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) within modern telecommunications networks, particularly in 4G/LTE, 5G, and beyond.

Centralized AAA

Diameter servers provide a centralised platform for handling AAA functions, replacing older protocols like RADIUS. This allows for consistent and scalable management of user access and service usage.

The SLF module uses signalling information to determine subscriber location. If additional interfaces are available to determine subscriber location, these can be implemented within the SLF, or as a stand-alone sub-system which will be customised to requirements.

The CAMEL Application Part (CAP) is a signalling protocol used in the Intelligent Network (IN) architecture. TruTeq offers a CAP to Diameter protocol converter module as an enhancement to the Diameter suite.

CAP / CAMEL

CAP has been defined in the 3GPP specifications in four phases, each of which has an accompanying specification that builds upon the previous phase.

Protocol Conversion

The module is able to accept CAMEL Phase 2 based events via an SS7 interface, transform those events into the required Diameter format, route those events to the OCS and then reply with a CAMEL Phase 2 response according to the Diameter reply from the OCS.

Diameter – OCS Bypass

Intelligent bypass of OCS responses to ensure no service disruption for certain customer categories

Bypass

The OCS Bypass Module uses the TruTeq transform capability to send automatic replies to core network charge requests, without the need for a reply from the OCS.

For instance, in cases where the OCS becomes unavailable due to overload or maintenance work, the TruTeq Diameter node can be placed into Intelligent Bypass mode, where it responds with positive acknowledgements to charge requests from the core, allowing services to continue for customers or a subset of customers.

Intelligent Bypass

The bypass may be limited to a subset of customers or a subset of service types:

  • A white list of customers (usually identified by IMSI) may be provisioned on the node. 
When Bypass mode is toggled ON, those customers’ services will always remain available.
  • Transforms may also be created for each relevant bearer type, e.g., Voice, SMS, Data, etc.

Data Records

While Intelligent Bypass is toggled on, the node retains CDRs for later ingestion and reconciliation by the OCS or BSS stack.

Diameter Transform Engine

The Diameter Transform Engine can, in real time, modify Diameter command content in order to alter it to a peering element’s requirements.

Provides compatibility between different elements and value-added services, enforcing business rules on different commands, performing administrative tasks for a specific realm or generating service triggers to other core systems.

Connections and transforms to destination peers are created and added in real time and require no restarts or downtime.

Service Triggers

When one of the TruTeq Diameter Solutions are in use, it can also be utilised to create service triggers based on defined events passing through the node. Service triggers may be used to initiate various workflows, processes or messages.

Diameter Transform Engine

Service Triggers may be generated using TruTeq’s Diameter Transform engine to examine and act on the contents of Diameter messages passing through the system.

Using this capability, practically any Attribute-Value Pair (AVP) in a Diameter message may be used to initiate a service trigger.

API Integration

In simpler use cases, service triggers could be sent directly from the TruTeq Diameter node to the interface exposed by the systems in the core network.

More complex environments would use the <TruTeq API Gateway> to co-ordinate the flow of triggers.

Existing Support & Rapid Development

Likewise, TruTeq has references from satisfied customers, with successful integrations to a multitude of standards-based interfaces exposed by OSS & BSS systems.

Should a bespoke interface be required, TruTeq is able to rapidly integrate using the capabilities of the Diameter Transform engine and TruTeq API Gateway.

Efficient use of the provisioned Diameter capacity

The Diameter MUX manages incoming Diameter connections and will establish its own binds to the configured primary nodes. The incoming traffic for new sessions is distributed evenly across the available primary nodes while updates to open sessions are routed to the primary node managing that session. This allows for efficient use of the provisioned Diameter capacity.

Message Copy Capability

The MUX can also send a copy of Diameter events to an alternate Diameter node. This may be all events, or a filtered subset. This is a useful capability for troubleshooting, QA and load-testing activities.
